Environmental fines

Environmental fines

We can issue environmental fines under the Resource Management Act 1991 for:

  • breaching resource consent conditions
  • breaching district plan rules, e.g. damaging a protected tree or dividing your house into units without consent
  • polluting rivers, streams or the sea

You must pay the amount on the notice within 28 days of the notice date, unless you write to us to dispute the infringement.

If you haven’t written to us or paid your fine, we lodge your infringement with the Department of Courts. They have the authority to enforce the fine, including extra costs.
