Creative Communities Scheme

This scheme supports and encourages local communities to participate in arts.

'The arts' are broadly defined as 'all forms of creative and interpretative expression'. 

What may be funded

An application can be from an individual or from a group. This is who the funding will be paid to if successful.

Individual applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

If you've previously received funding under this scheme, either as an individual or as a member of a group, you must complete a project report for the earlier project before we can consider further applications.

Projects must meet one or more of the following criteria:

Broad community involvement - The project will create opportunities for local communities to engage with and participate in arts activities.

Diversity - The project will support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities, enriching and promoting their uniqueness and cultural diversity.

Young people - The project will enable and encourage young people (under 18 years) to engage with and actively participate in the arts.

The project must:

  • have an arts or creative cultural focus
  • meet one or more of the three funding criteria
  • be completed within 12 months of funding approval
  • take place within or benefit communities within the city or district where the application is made
  • not have started before funding is approved; and
  • not have already received funding for the same purpose from Creative New Zealand.

This could include:

  • exhibitions, productions, concerts, festivals, workshops and presentations that offer opportunities for community involvement in the arts
  • activities that support the traditions and arts of ethnic communities
  • youth arts events
  • artist-led projects involving local communities
  • materials for arts activities or programmes
  • personnel costs for one-off, short-term projects
  • promotion and publicity of arts activities to communities.

What cannot be funded

Funding is not available for:

  • activities that are not arts-focused
  • activities that are the direct responsibility of schools or other education institutions
  • ongoing administration costs not related to a specific project
  • projects that are the core business of an organisation or service provider
  • retrospective project costs (for projects already started or completed)
  • catering costs of an event
  • fundraising activities
  • travel for individuals or groups to attend events, presentations or shows
  • developing facilities such as gallery and theatre lights, stage curtains or building restoration
  • buying capital items, such as computers, cameras, musical instruments, costumes or uniforms
  • royalties.

Local rounds

For projects that primarily take place in either North, West, Central or South.

Regional round

You must provide evidence to show:

  • your project will take place across two or more geographical areas and/or
  • the target demographic for your programme or initiative is spread across the region and
  • your ability to deliver the activity on a regional scale to an acceptable level.

How to apply

You can apply online when the next round opens. Applications will close 5pm, 29 August 2014.

We recommend you attend an information session so we can hear more details about your upcoming project and give you advice on how to write your application.

If you would like to organise a group of 10 or more people during the year, contact us and we will come out and do an information workshop for you.

Fund size

There is approximately $500,000 available for distribution across the region for each funding round.

Individual grants will usually be between $250 and $10,000.

Information for successful applicants

You will receive a letter advising that your application was successful.

Successful applicants must use Auckland Council's Creative Communities logo on promotional material and submit a project form online following the completion of their project.
