First World War photos and memorabilia

Auckland Libraries and Auckland War Memorial Museum Library would welcome your donations of photos and memorabilia relating to the First World War.

Please contact Auckland War Memorial Museum at: library@aucklandmuseum.com if you have war diaries, letters, documents and printed items relating to Auckland-wide matters.

You can email more local content, such as photographs of local places and people, orders of service for Anzac Day, posters and printed postcards to specialcollections@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

We will distribute these across the relevant four research centres and Sir George Grey Special Collections. Our collections staff will need to appraise the donations.

Paptoetoe War Memorial.

Auckland Libraries are planning a series of exhibitions and projects to highlight the First World War-related items it has in its heritage collections.

Online access to heritage collections is through a number of different databases, which relate to the different formats of the resources found in the collections.

For example, you can find photographs through Heritage Images, Local History Online and Footprints and access digitised newspapers through Papers Past.

Auckland Libraries staff can help you search these databases. You can find more information about these resources on the Digital Resources page of the Auckland Libraries website.

Lion Rock memorial.

You can also visit the Auckland Libraries website to learn about, understand and remember the sacrifices of our soldiers and military personnel in armed conflicts.
