Totara Park

One of south Auckland’s premier parks, Totara Park, stretches over 216 hectares and has something for everyone.


Location

  • Close to Manukau CBD, located next door to the Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens
  • 25km - 22 minutes from downtown Auckland

Enjoy a tranquil, country atmosphere just minutes from the Manukau CBD. Relax and unwind amongst the superb flora and fauna or stroll through rolling farmland, taking in views from Glenbrook and Manukau Heads to Rangitoto.

Those in a more active mood can make the most of the tennis, swimming and barbeque area, trek the bridle trail or explore the many different walking tracks through the large stands of native bush and farmland.

How to get there

By car

Entry to Totara Park is from Wairere Road, Redoubt Road and the lookout point off Goodwood Drive/Eugenia Rise.

Amenities and activities

Adventure playground

Children will love the award winning adventure playground located next to the picnic area at the Wairere Road entrance.

There is also a second playground just a short walk from the main picnic area along the main bridle trail.

Swimming pool

During summer months enjoy the free supervised outdoor swimming pool and paddling pools. From 14 December to 23 December the pools will be open from 11am-7.45pm.

The pools will be closed 24-25 December (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).

From 26 December to 5 January the pools will be open 11am-6.45pm, excluding 31 December (New Years eve) when they will close at 4.45pm. 

From 6 January to 26 February the pools will be open 11am-7.45pm Monday-Sunday.

From 26 February to 30 March the pools will be open from 3pm-6.45pm Monday-Friday and 11am-6.45pm on weekends.

Mountain bike tracks

There is a range of newly established mountain bike tracks in the north eastern section of the park to suit a wide range of abilities.

Please park at the Redoubt Road entrance.

Horse riding

There is a public, shared use bridle trail for horse riding. The farm track runs across open farmland on gently rolling hills.

Good parking is available at the Redoubt Road carpark.

Tennis court

The tennis court is available year around.

Picnics and barbeques

You are welcome to bring your own barbeque to the park, picnic tables are located around the main picnic area off Wairere Road.

Homestead

The Beaufords Reception Lounge is a popular venue for weddings and other functions.

Lookout

The lookout off Eugenia Rise gives sweeping views from Rangitoto Island to the north, Manukau CBD, McLaughlins Mountain, and the distant Manukau Heads in the west, over to the Bombay Hills in the south.

Vegetation and birdlife

The native bush at Totara Park is an example of the rich variety of vegetation that once covered the South Auckland area. The park is also home to a wide variety of bird habitats.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome within designated areas, provided they are kept under control by their owners. Dogs must be kept on a leash in all bush areas.


Walks

Walks/bridle trail

A range of shared walkways/bridle trails can be found throughout the park.

A popular route is the 3km farm track extending from Redoubt Road carpark to the Wairere Road picnic area and carpark.

Bush tracks

Several pleasant bush tracks can be found on the reserve, ranging from 20 - 45 minutes.

 All routes are shown on the information board at the Wairere Road entrance.

Puhinui Stream Forest Trail

Puhinui Stream Forest Trail is a longer walk linking Totara Park and the Botanic Gardens. It is approximately 4km and takes up to two hours.
