Central walkways

Here are some of the walkways you can enjoy in central Auckland.

Auckland Domain

The Auckland Domain is home to several great walking and running trails:

  • The Domain Walk will take you from the Domain’s Parnell entrance to Lower Domain Drive, near Stanley Street, via the Parnell Rail Station. This walk takes you through native bush and takes about 20 minutes in either direction.
  • Centennial Walkway runs from Grafton Mews up to the Duck Ponds in the heart of the Domain.
  • Throughout the Domain are a number of walks through native bush. ‘Lovers Walk’ is a 500m bush path that runs parallel to Centennial Walkway. The Glade path links Lower Domain Drive to Lovers Lane. The Nikau Walk links Glade path to the middle of Lovers Walk.

Elsewhere in the Domain are shared paths, to be enjoyed by walkers and cyclists. These two areas include Lovers lane, a tree lined paved surface that runs from lower Domain Drive to the Crescent, and a section of Grandstand Road between Kiosk Road and the Grandstand.

Oakley Creek

Also known as Te Auaunga, is the location of the only waterfall within the central area. Historically, ecologically and geologically valuable, it is the home of many and varied plant and bird life. It is also known as Oakley Creek Esplanade Reserve. It has a viewing platform, boardwalk and table. It is located between Great North Road (near the cycle overbridge) and Blockhouse Bay Road, Waterview at 1408 to 1508 Great North Road. The walk takes about an hour.

Orakei Basin walk

This walk takes you around the Orakei Basin using the boardwalk and bridge across the Purewa arm of the basin.
