How to apply for a building consent to install photovoltaic panels

You only need to apply for building consent if the photovoltaic panels are your roof's cladding.

We only accept online applications for a building consent to install photovoltaic (solar) panels. If you are unable to apply digitally, visit one of our libraries with council services for assistance in making your online application.

If there is no way to provide digital copies of your plans or documents, visit one of our libraries with council services. Our staff will accept your documents for an additional charge. The charge covers costs involved with us scanning your documents into our digital building consent system

What happens next

We process the solar panel applications within 20 working days.

We will let you know the decision by email and post.
