Get your food registration first. You will need either a food control plan (for most restaurants) or a national programme (for lower-risk operations).
You also need to register your business with the New Zealand Companies Office.
If you plan to sell alcohol for consumption on-site, apply for an on-licence. You must also have at least one staff member with a Manager’s Certificate (alcohol). Before applying for an alcohol licence, you need certificates confirming the site meets Building Code and Resource Management Act standards.
All food businesses must be checked by a recognised verifier (either us or an independent agency) within six weeks of opening.
