When you visit our parks, you need to clean your footwear and equipment to avoid transferring disease from one area to another.

About Āwhitu Regional Park

Awhitu Regional Park - view of Kauritūtahi Beach.

A pleasant country drive through Waiuku leads to peaceful Āwhitu on the southwest shores of the Manukau Harbour.

Wander freely over parkland pastures, explore the wetlands, enjoy the safe, sandy beaches and sheltered picnic and barbecue areas.

You need to know

Animals

Dogs, other animals and pets are prohibited at all Auckland Council regional parks' bookable sites and accommodation. The exception is registered aid dogs. You will need to advise our staff at time of booking if you have a registered aid dog for an exemption.
Dogs are allowed in regional parks only as stated in the dog walking section. All other animals are prohibited at all times, unless you have a permit issued by Auckland Council.

Alcohol

Visible and excessive consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
We may ask you and your group to leave the park and terminate your permit.

Smokefree regional parks

Our regional parks are smoke-free.
Please observe this while staying on or using our regional parks.

Waste

All our regional parks are rubbish free. Take all rubbish and recycling with you when you leave.

Outdoor fires

It is illegal to light a fire outside in all public areas in the Auckland region.

Facilities at Āwhitu Regional Park

Pedestrian access

Open 24 hours

Mobility access (partial)

Roads and paths are metal and access is dependant on ground conditions.

Gate access summer

6am to 9pm (Daylight saving)

Gate access winter

6am to 7pm (Non-daylight saving)

Vehicle access

An automatic gate is located at the park entrance. No access after closing hours. It will open at any time for vehicles exiting the park.

Toilet block

There is one toilet block at the main carpark.

Limited mobility toilet

The main carpark has wheelchair accessible toilets.

Parking

There are 65 carparks available. An extra 425 parks are available on the golf course paddocks and 144 on the access road paddock.

Pram access

Awhitu is mostly pram-friendly. Walks may be challenging in places and are dependent on conditions.

Beaches

There are two beaches: Brook Beach and Kauritutahi Beach. We recommend you wear footwear at all times as there are sharp oyster shells along both beaches.

Boat ramp

Boat ramp at the end of Featon Avenue.

Ranger contact phone

There is ranger contact phone at the park.

Drinking fountain

There is one drinking fountain by the toilets at the carpark.

BBQ

There are five electric start gas BBQs. One BBQ is a bookable site just off from the carpark, near the toilets and drinking fountain. Two of the BBQs are in the campsites. Large groups need a permit.

There is one notice board at this park.

Boat ramp

There is a boat ramp at the end of Featon Avenue in the north of the park. There is access to the water for two hours either side of high tide only.

Wharf

Brook Homestead Walk

45 minutes, 1.5 km
Mountain buggy and pram access but not suitable for wheelchairs. Check if Brook Homestead Walk is open.

Settlers Farm Track

60 minutes, 3 km
Tramping track. Not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Check if Settlers Farm Track is open.

Settlers Valley Walk

90 minutes, 3km
Suitable for prams. No wheelchair access. Check if Settlers Valley Walk is open.

Activities at Āwhitu Regional Park

Bird watching

Expect to see fern bird, tūī, kererū, fantail, bitten, banded rail and pūkeko.

Mountain biking

Settlers Farm track is 3km long.

Farm animals viewing

Sheep and cattle are farmed at Awhitu.

Weddings

You may need to apply for a permit to have an event or wedding in a regional park. For more information call 09 301 0101 and ask to speak to a sector office.

Drones

Picnics

Although there are no designated picnic sites, feel free to find your own favourite spot to picnic.

Horse riding

Designated trails over gentle rolling farmland. Find out more information about horse riding and how to get a horse riding pass.

Walking

Brook Homestead walk will take less than an hour, and Settlers Valley walk will take one hour or longer.

Orienteering

There are 29 markers located around the park, including an example marker by the noticeboard. See Orienteering to get the maps, also available from the noticeboard.

Swimming

Safe swimming is available at both beaches. We recommend you wear footwear at all times as there are sharp oyster shells along both beaches and in the water.
