The Age-friendly Auckland Action Plan is a region-wide, cross-sector programme.
It was developed to improve the wellbeing of older Aucklanders in our region.
This plan supports the collaboration between the Auckland Council, aged-sector organisations and our communities to ensure Tāmaki Makaurau is age-friendly and inclusive.
Tāmaki Makaurau Tauawhi Kaumātua (the Age-friendly Auckland Action Plan) was created to respond to the needs of our growing, and increasingly diverse, older Aucklanders.
It is designed to ensure their needs are met, both now and into the future, improving their wellbeing and quality of life.
Our plan is based on the Te Whare Tapa Whā - a Māori wellbeing model and World Health Organization’s Age-friendly Cities and Communities Framework.
It reflects the bicultural identity of Aotearoa and the diversity of Tāmaki Makaurau.
Auckland has the largest population of people aged 65 and older in New Zealand.
Our aging population will create opportunities as well as greater and more complex demands on services and infrastructure.
In addition, our region will be home to substantially more ethnically and culturally diverse older people over the next few decades.
The diversity of Aucklanders varies across our local board areas including:
Visit Knowledge Auckland for detailed information about the diversity of Auckland's older population.
The Age-friendly Auckland Action Plan will help to:
It outlines the actions that are already underway.
In addition, it introduces new initiatives that organisations will start over the next five years.
The World Health Organization (WHO) established the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities in 2006.
These cities are committed to supporting each other and creating inclusive and accessible environments for all people to enjoy.
Tāmaki Makaurau joined the Network in March 2022.
Our framework is unique to Tāmaki Makaurau.
It ensures the actions within the plan are meaningful, achievable, and impactful for older Aucklanders.
To develop the plan, we gathered feedback on what an age-friendly city would look like through:
We heard from over 5000 Aucklanders of all ages and backgrounds.
You told us that older people want a friendly and inclusive Auckland. You want a community where they are valued and have opportunities to participate. You also valued connection between people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds.
Te hanga kōtuinga me ētahi atu ki te whakatutuki mahere.
The aged sector is diverse, delivering a range of facilities, services and support. They will play a significant role in delivering the action plan alongside their own objectives.
Implementation will be carried out by us, alongside many different communities, organisations and groups that are listed in the plan.
