Waiheke and the Inner Hauraki Gulf Islands Shoreline Adaptation Plan (SAP)

The Waiheke and the Inner Hauraki Gulf Islands SAP considers the future of council-owned land and assets across the region's coastal areas in response to the impacts of coastal processes, climate change, erosion and flooding.

About the Waiheke and the Inner Hauraki Gulf Islands SAP

The Waiheke Local Board endorsed this SAP in September 2025. 

This SAP covers Waiheke and the Inner Hauraki Gulf Islands and the islands off its north and south coasts. 

The SAP includes, but is not limited to:  

• Waiheke Island
• Rangitoto
• Motutapu
• Rākino
• Motuihe / Te Motu-a-Ihenga
• Motukorea / Browns Island
• Southeastern islands including Ponui and Rotoroa.

Stages of the Waiheke and the Inner Hauraki Gulf Islands SAP

• Late 2025 - present plan to the Policy and Planning Committee for approval.
• September 2025 - plan endorsed by the Waiheke Local Board.
• October 2024 to August 2025 - feedback reviewed, final plan drafted and developed.
• 7 August to 7 October 2024 - plan opened for public consultation (community feedback).
• April 2024 and ongoing - local iwi engagement.
