About Te Rimutahi

Te Rimutahi provides a much-needed public space in central Ponsonby. We have transformed the site at 254 Ponsonby Road into an area where you can connect, relax and play.

Features of the space

The space has raised planter beds and a grass area for people to meet and relax. The urban canopy provides shelter from sun and rain. A raised hardwood floor completes the look, with a ramp at one end and steps at both.

An accessible pathway connects the space with Ponsonby Road and O'Neill Street.

How the design supports sustainability

The design of the space supports our goal of reducing Auckland’s carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.

We have:

  • installed a refurbished toilet block removed from Bledisloe Place when City Rail Link construction began
  • repurposed parts of the original buildings like the steel frames, concrete floors and walls
  • kept existing and planted new trees to expand the urban forest and restore biodiversity in the area
  • planted gardens to increase permeable areas and reduce stormwater runoff
  • used low energy LED lighting throughout the site
  • installed solar panels on the canopy roof to generate electricity.

Hold an event at Te Rimutahi

Te Rimutahi is a public space and cannot be booked for exclusive use.

If you would like to use the stage area to hold a small event you need to talk to our events team.

Check Event permits to find out:

  • if you need an event permit
  • what other licenses or permits you might need
  • who to contact to discuss your event proposal.
