Anawhata

Surf at Anawhata if you're prepared to walk.

Karekare

On a good day the surf can be great at Karekare.

Like with all adventure activities, assess the potential risks and make sure that the location is appropriate for your level of experience.

There is only a beach patrol at certain times of the year.

Long Bay

If there's a big swell on the east coast then there are often waves here.

Muriwai

Muriwai Beach and Māori Bay often have good surf.

Māori Bay is more consistent, but usually more crowded.

Piha

Piha is a great spot for surfing, particularly at the northern and southern ends of the beach.

Tāwharanui

Tāwharanui is a popular location for surfers, especially if there is a swell on the east coast.

There are a couple of north facing beaches which make for good surfing in more southerly winds.

Te Henga — Bethells

There is good surf at Bethells Beach and O'Neill Beach.

Whatipu

The Whatipū area is a scientific reserve owned by the Department of Conservation and managed on its behalf by Auckland Council Regional Parks.

It is a spectacular area of coastal dunes and wetlands.
