COVID-19 transfer station information

From 6pm on 25 March, the Waitākere, Aotea/Great Barrier Island Claris Landfill and Waiheke transfer stations will be closed to the general public and open only for licensed waste collectors providing essential services.

For information on a privately-managed transfer station, contact them directly.

What is a transfer station

A transfer station is a place that accepts and treats waste before bringing it to a landfill or recycling facility.

Waste collectors and the public can bring waste items not suitable for kerbside collection to transfer stations.

This includes:

  • garden waste
  • household waste
  • hazardous items
  • scrap metal.

Check which items a transfer station accepts before you use their service.

You can also drop off many items at a community recycling centre. This includes, in many cases, green waste and general rubbish.

See How to get rid of unwanted items to get disposal options for specific items.
