Background to Auckland's local government changes
In April 2009 the Government responded to the report of the Royal Commission on Auckland governance and agreed with the recommendation that there should be bold change to make Auckland the most exciting, vibrant metropolitan centre in Australasia.
At the same time the Government announced that the seven existing city and district councils and the Auckland Regional Council be disestablished and a new unitary council, the Auckland Council, be established.
From 1 November 2010 the Auckland Council replaced the existing Auckland Regional Council, Auckland City Council, Manukau City Council, North Shore City Council, Papakura District Council, Rodney District Council, Waitakere City Council, Franklin District Council and any associated community boards.
This new structure of local governance for Auckland was established by the Local Government (Tamaki Makaurau Reorganisation) Act 2009, the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009 and the Local Government (Auckland Transitional Provisions) Act 2010.
