10
years to build a better Auckland
More than 1.7 million people will call Auckland home by the
time this 10-year plan has been fully rolled out. The new Auckland Council is
now in a position to tackle the long-standing issues facing our region and
prepare us for that future growth.
Our goal is to turn Auckland into the world's most liveable city. This
draft Long-term Plan 2012-2022 (LTP) takes the first steps toward that goal by
identifying the projects and initiatives that will provide a catalyst for
Auckland's transformation.
To reach our potential we need to get a number of key
things right, including:
- a world-class transport system
- a productive high-value economy
- a healthy environment
- strong local communities.
A range of initiatives to help us achieve those goals are
in this draft LTP. I believe this package enables us to prepare for the future
at the same time as balancing the impact of the change on ratepayers. That is
why this plan proposes an average rate increase of 3.6 per cent for 2012/13 and
3.6 to 4.9 per cent in subsequent years.
We are also dealing with the challenge of bringing eight
different rating systems into one. The new system will mean that properties of
equal value will be paying equal rates, wherever you are in the region.
The council's test is to build on the successes of the
first year and renewed sense of progress to provide us with the platform we need
to transform Auckland into an even better place to live, work and play.
