What is the Auckland Plan
The Auckland Plan is the strategy to make Auckland the world’s most liveable city. This plan will have a major impact on Aucklanders lives over the next 30 years. It will shape where we live and work and the transport we use.
The Auckland Plan’s horizon stretches to 2040. It must therefore be flexible and responsive to shifting dynamics within NZ and globally.
Auckland will face several critical challenges over the next 30 years, including:
- population growth and demographic change
- climate change and energy security
- international economic competitiveness
- social and economic inequalities
- environmental quality
- infrastructure planning, provision and funding.
Of all the important changes we need to make, five transformational shifts stand out as being critically important:
- Dramatically accelerate the prospects of Auckland’s children and young people
- Strongly commit to environmental action and green growth
- Move to outstanding public transport within one network
- Radically improve the quality of urban living
- Substantially raise the living standards for all Aucklanders and focus on those most in need.
The Auckland Plan was adopted by the Auckland Council’s Governing Body at its meeting held on 29 March 2012. The plan is currently in the final editing, design and production phase. A final version of the Plan will be available from this page in June 2012. In the meantime a copy of the plan considered and adopted by the Governing Body can be found here:

The scope of the Auckland Plan itself extends well beyond the mandate and budgets of Auckland Council, requiring a collaborative approach with Government and many other stakeholders, including the private sector. Local board plans will also inform and drive, and in turn be driven by, the Auckland Plan.
