About the path

This one and a half hour walk takes you along the coastal path that every two years hosts the Sculpture of the Gulf exhibition. The walkway has wonderful views over the Matiatia Channel to the islands of Motuihe, Motutapu and Rangitoto. You can extend your walk with a visit to one of the nearby world-class vineyards.

Catch a ferry from downtown Auckland over to Waiheke Island. You’ll go along the Matiatia foreshore, then up through regenerating forest to lookouts on the top of the headland spur. Follow the coastal walkway around to Te Miro Bay, where a small stream empties into the Bay. Turn left (inland) here, to link up with Nick Johnstone drive. Turn right along Nick Johnstone Drive and return to the lookout over Matiatia Bay then return to the start the same way as you came up.

Can be muddy in winter. You will need good shoes all year round – there are steep sections, but it’s one of the best walkways around.

You will go past architecturally significant homes, vineyards and ancient pōhutukawa. There are incredible views and interpretive panels with insights to the inner Hauraki Gulf.

Popular coastal route, mostly on gravel walking tracks. Some steps, so not baby buggy friendly. No water or public toilets on the route.

A challenging but very rewarding family walk.
