Transfer stations

You can take waste that is not suitable for kerbside collection to a transfer station.

Most transfer stations accept garden waste, large household waste, hazardous household waste and scrap metal but you should check what you can take before you go.

The Resource Recovery Centre has second hand goods for sale to the public.

Household quantities of furniture accepted at no charge if it is:

  • in a reusable condition i.e. not in need of repair, containing borer, etc
  • separate from other rubbish and must be clean and dry.

Items not accepted by transfer station staff must be removed or a disposal fee will be charged.

Whangaparāoa Recycling Depot

The site only accepts recyclables, including:

  • glass bottles and jars
  • steel and aluminium cans
  • plastic containers grades 1 - 6
  • paper and flattened cardboard.

 

Waiheke Island Transfer Station

The transfer station accepts most types of waste, including:

  • general rubbish
  • hazardous waste
  • green waste
  • building materials
  • recyclable materials.

Items not accepted at the station include:

  • odorous waste
  • veterinary, hospital and medical waste
  • liquid waste
  • timber preservatives, asbestos and chemical manufacturing residues
  • herbicides and insecticides
  • car bodies
  • commercial hazardous waste
  • fill.

Free scrap wood, suitable for a variety of purposes, is available from the transfer station throughout the year. All the wood has been recovered from the waste stream.

 

Great Barrier Island Claris Landfill

The transfer station accepts most types of waste, including:

  • general rubbish
  • hazardous waste
  • green waste
  • building materials
  • recyclable materials.

Waiuku Community Recycling Centre

The community recycling centre accepts most types of waste, including:

  • general rubbish
  • green waste
  • building materials
  • recyclable materials.

Items not accepted at the station include:

  • liquid waste
  • timber preservatives, asbestos and chemical manufacturing residues
  • herbicides and insecticides
  • car bodies
  • commercial hazardous waste
  • fill (soil, clay).

Costs and payment options

From 1 July 2015.

The weighbridge can be used to weigh a car or other vehicles. The charge is $10.50.

Note: Commercial rates are subject to change between February and April (inclusive) by monthly notice.

  • hazardous waste including, batteries, computers, paint, fridges, some chemicals, light bulbs
  • LPG gas bottles
  • recycling.

Waste not accepted

  • asbestos
  • ballasts - inside fluorescent light fittings
  • medical waste and sharps
  • odorous waste, e.g. rotting waste
  • waste likely to create airborne dust or particles, e.g. sawdust, powders, etc
  • waste in quantities likely to cause handling difficulties or machine malfunction, e.g. polystyrene, unraveled tape, string, rope, plastic film.

Costs

No charge to drop off household quantities of:

  • appliances, metal only (all other appliances charged as household rubbish)
  • aluminium cans
  • computers - whole computers only (up to three)
  • furniture (excludes mattresses and mirrors), in good reusable condition, not mixed with rubbish
  • glass - jars and clean colour sorted bottles only
  • hazardous waste (call to check on quantities and what's accepted)
  • lawnmowers
  • metal - corrugated iron roofing, tin cans, metal roofing tiles, steel - small pieces, not attached to anything
  • paper and cardboard
  • plastic containers grades 1-7, bottles
  • smoke alarms (up to four)
  • whiteware (fridges, stoves, washing machines, microwaves etc) - must be empty otherwise charged.
