Mahurangi West Regional Park offers sheltered bays, native bush, open pasture and historic sites. You can enjoy this favourite stop for boaties all year round.

You can access Te Muri Regional Park on foot from Mahurangi West Regional Park by crossing the Te Muri Estuary two hours either side of low tide.

Animals

Dogs, other animals and pets are prohibited at all Auckland Council regional parks' bookable sites and accommodation. The exception is registered aid dogs. You will need to advise our staff at time of booking if you have a registered aid dog for an exemption.
Dogs are allowed in regional parks only as stated in the dog walking section. All other animals are prohibited at all times, unless you have a permit issued by Auckland Council.

Alcohol

Visible and excessive consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
We may ask you and your group to leave the park and terminate your permit.

Smokefree regional parks

Our regional parks are smoke-free.
Please observe this while staying on or using our regional parks.

Waste

All our regional parks are rubbish free. Take all rubbish and recycling with you when you leave.

Outdoor fires

It is illegal to light a fire outside in all public areas in the Auckland region.

Limited roadside car parking available at Ngarewa Drive track entrance to Tungutu Lookout. Follow the blue markers and signs for Mita Bay. Parking with your dog is not allowed.

Alternative to Otuawao Bay (Mita Bay) is nearby Opahi Bay, where dogs are allowed under control on a leash at any time (including lambing season).

Pedestrian access

Open 24 hours

Mobility access

Sullivan’s Bay has reasonable limited mobility access to the beachside picnic areas but no formed path for beach access. For special access provisions, contact us on 09 3010101.

Much of Mahurangi is unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

Mountain buggy access

Parts of the track network are mountain buggy accessible but can be very challenging in the steep areas.

Unsealed access road

Two short sections totalling 1km of Ngarewa Drive are unsealed.

Gate access summer

6am to 9pm (Daylight saving)

Gate access winter

6am to 7pm (Non-daylight saving)

Vehicle access

An automatic gate is located at the park entrance. No access after closing hours. It will open at any time for vehicles exiting the park.

Parking

There are two car parks at Mahurangi West. Top car park: 25 spaces. Sullivan’s Bay car park: 40 spaces. There are grass overflow parking areas of approximately 200 spaces. Accessible only if other car parks are full and ground conditions allow.

Limited mobility toilet

There is a limited mobility cubicle at the Sullivan’s Bay main toilet block. Access is from across the sealed road and path.

Toilets

Mahurangi West Regional Park has six unisex toilet blocks: three at Sullivan’s Bay (in the centre, at the southern end, in the campground), two at Te Muri Beach campground, and one at Mita Bay. Lagoon Bay campground at Mahurangi East Regional Park, Sadler Point has one unisex long drop toilet.

Mobile phone coverage

Poor in general, but there are patches of coverage in various locations.

Ranger contact phone

A ranger contact phone is located at the main information board in the middle of Sullivan’s Bay, next to the main toilet block.

Notice boards

The main notice board is in the middle of Sullivan’s Bay, next to the main toilet block, and contains a map, codes and bylaws, tide charts and brochures. There are notice boards located at each of the campgrounds.

Picnic sites

There are no designated picnic sites, but feel free to find your own spot and bring your own gas BBQ.

Water supply

Drinking water is from a treated bore supply and is safe to drink. Drinking fountains are located along the foreshore of Sullivans Bay and Mita Bay.

Dinghy ramp

Music

No amplified music is allowed. This includes bluetooth speakers and amps.

Native bush

Patches of mature coastal forest can be seen on the Mita Bay Loop Track and at Cudlip and Te Muri points. Kānuka, taraire, pūriri, karaka and kōwhai are present. Scarlet flowering pōhutukawa are spectacular at Mahurangi East Regional Park, Scott Point in summer.

Not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Check if Te Muri Loop is open.

Cudlip Point Loop Track

120 minutes, 3 km
Suitable for prams. No wheelchair access. Check if Cudlip Point Loop Track is open.

Mita Bay Loop Track

120 minutes, 2 km
Not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Check if Mita Bay Loop Track is open.

Activities at Mahurangi West Regional Park

Farm animals viewing

Mahurangi West is a working farm so you may meet sheep during your visit. Feel free to wander through the paddocks containing farm animals. Avoid walking between young stock and their mums. You must follow all safety signs and respect restricted areas. Please leave gates as you find them.

Walking

Mahurangi has unmarked short walks around the bays and pasture. At low tide, walk across the rocks out to Pudding Island, or try the network of longer walking tracks for stunning ocean views and get up close to nature within native forest and bush land.

Swimming

Sullivan's Bay has vehicle access and is great for swimming in all tides. Te Muri and Mita Bay are only accessible by boat or foot. At Mahurangi East Regional Park there is Big Bay, though Lagoon Bay is not ideal for swimming. Sadler Point is only accessible by boat.

Sightseeing

Enjoy stunning 180 degree views that take in the Hauraki Gulf Islands and Mahurangi Harbour. There are several great vantage points from the parks' walking tracks with specified lookout positions at Tungutu and Cudlip points.

Weddings

You may need a permit to hold a wedding or civil union ceremony at this regional park. Visit Apply for a permit to have an event or wedding in a regional park for more information, or call 09 301 0101 and ask to speak to a Senior Park Ranger.

Picnics

You may bring your own gas barbecue. Groups of 75 or more require a discretionary consent, granted on a case by case basis. Scott Homestead and grounds are available to hire for small groups and family events.

Camping - vehicle based

Sullivan’s Bay is an easily accessed, vehicle-based campground. Its popularity means early booking is advised. A great location for swimming, picnics, water sports, walking, and exploring.

Diving

Scuba diving sites are limited due to the shallow tidal nature of the harbour. The best sites are accessible by boat only.

Good snorkelling opportunities exist around the rocky outcrops of each of the parks' bays.

Surfing

Wind surfing is permitted at Mahurangi so long as it does not disturb other park visitors. Care must be taken when there are other swimmers in the water. No vessels are to be used within the life guard flags.

Kayaking

Enjoy a short paddle from Sullivan’s Bay around the corner to Mita Bay or Te Muri Beach. For the more experienced kayaker, Mahurangi is a good base to explore Kawau Bay including popular destinations such as Motoroa Island (DoC managed).

Bird watching

There is plenty here for the bird enthusiasts. Check bird watching for information about what you can see and where.

Boating

The harbour offers shelter from most wind directions, but tide may influence conditions when the wind opposes the tide. Boats up to 3m in length can be hand launched/retrieved. They must be carried over the parkland from car park to avoid damage to grass.

Camping - SCC vehicle parking

Self contained motorhomes can stay for one night only unless the Sullivan’s Bay campground is closed - in this case, they can stay for three nights. Self contained vehicles must have a current Self-Containment Certificate.

You must book to stay at Sullivan's Bay campground and Mahurangi CSC parking area.

Mountain biking

Mountain biking is permitted on open farmland and all tracks, unless otherwise indicated. However, the area isn’t considered mountain bike friendly with most tracks crossing farm paddocks and many closed gates.

Orienteering

There are 20 markers located around the park, including an example marker by the noticeboard. Check Orienteering to get the maps, also available from the noticeboard.

Volunteering

Volunteer tasks may include tree planting, track maintenance, mulching, and pest management. You can also enjoy a free and extended stay as a camp host at our three Mahurangi campgrounds - call 09 301 0101 and ask to speak to the northern regional parks office for details.

Drones

Drones cannot be flown in regional parks without a permit.

Fishing

Land based fishing enthusiasts can try for kahawai and snapper from the rocky outcrops of Mahurangi. Pudding Island can be fished over the low tide but extreme care is required from an incoming tide. Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) regulations apply.

Camping - back country

Mahurangi offers three back country camping experiences. Te Muri and Mita Bay campsites are walk in or boat access only, and are great spots for swimming, water sports, walking and exploring. Lagoon Bay campsite is boat access only.
