The maps on this page show places where freedom camping is not allowed on Waiheke Island under the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw 2022.

This does not mean that freedom camping is allowed anywhere not shown.

In addition to the bylaw rules for the areas on Waiheke Island shown below, you also cannot freedom camp:

  • at council reserves (parkland held under the Reserves Act), unless we set aside areas for this in future
  • in regional parks
  • in car parks where parking is reserved, and/or a fee is charged to park (such as council parking buildings).

Freedom camping rules specific to Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island does not have a public dump station for campers to dispose of human waste and grey water (such as from your sink or shower). When you freedom camp on Waiheke, you must:

  • only freedom camp a maximum of two nights
  • leave Waiheke on the third day to dump your waste at a public dump station
  • not return to stay in the same road or off-road parking area on Waiheke within two weeks from 9am on the day you left.

If you want to camp on the island for more than two nights, you will need to find other self-contained accommodation.

General rules apply to freedom camping in other areas on Waiheke Island.
