Food scraps collection charges

Food scraps targeted rate

If you pay property rates in an Auckland area where our new food scraps collection service operates, you will see a charge for 'Waste management – food scraps service' in your rates for 2023/2024.

The annual rates charge for the 2023/2024 food scraps collection service is $77.20 for a property.

If the service started for your property after July 2023, you will see a partial charge in your rates for 2023/2024 based on the time of year when you first received the service.

Deciding to not use the service

You will still pay for the food scraps collection service through a targeted rate charge whether you accept the bin and use the service or not.

If you pay property rates in an area covered by the service, you cannot opt out of the charge. This is the same as for our roadside recycling bin service.

Both of these services contribute to the public good, providing a benefit to the city by reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

We estimate the food scraps collection service will divert 40,000 tonnes of waste per year, allowing this material to be processed in a way that helps our environment.
