Our heritage priorities

Our strategic direction regarding heritage

The strategic direction for Auckland's Historic Heritage / Ngā taonga nō Tuawhakarere o Tāmaki Makaurau is to protect and conserve Tāmaki Makaurau /Auckland's historic heritage for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.

Aucklanders expect that our unique historic heritage will continue to improve our quality of life – by reinforcing our sense of place and identity – and provide a legacy for future generations.

Our historic heritage priorities

The priorities for historic heritage within the Auckland Plan are to:

  • understand, value and share our heritage
  • invest in our heritage
  • empower collective stewardship of our heritage.

The Unitary Plan provides a framework for the identification, evaluation and ongoing management and protection of our historic heritage.

This includes:

  • historic heritage places
  • special character areas
  • notable trees
  • sites and places of significance to Mana Whenua.
