Community shellfish monitoring

What happens in this programme

The Hauraki Gulf Forum support Auckland Council, Waikato Regional Council, and the Department of Conservation (DoC) to work with schools, community and iwi groups to:

  • annually monitor cockles and pipis living in sheltered beaches, harbours and estuaries of the Hauraki Gulf
  • increase environmental awareness of ecological health
  • help the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) assess the effectiveness of its shellfish harvesting limits
  • provide annual report of survey findings.
