Freemans Bay stormwater network separation project

We are replacing the century-old combined stormwater and wastewater pipes in Freemans Bay to improve water quality and reduce flooding in the Waitematā Harbour.

Network separation and new stormwater system

This $24 million project is part of the Western Isthmus Water Quality Improvement programme and the construction of the Central Interceptor wastewater tunnel.

This work will:

  • significantly reduce overflows and sewage spills into Waitematā Harbour
  • improve water quality in Waitematā Harbour and make it safer for swimming
  • reduce the risk of flooding on Angelsea Street and Picton Street
  • help us better manage increasing demands on the system as our population grows.

How we'll do this

Our plan is to construct a 1.2km long stormwater pipeline, drainage separation and connection points in:

  • Picton Street
  • Anglesea Street
  • Barrie Street
  • Hepburn Street
  • Wellington Street.

We're also constructing  a new stormwater network connection to the main drainage area at the corner of Wellington Street and Hepburn Street.

Timeline

We have started site preparation work. This includes:

  • construction inspections and monitoring
  • ground surveys
  • design of a traffic management plan to minimise disruption.

Construction will begin in June 2019, and is expected to be finished before December 2020:

  • June to August 2019 - Site preparation work
  • September 2019 - Construction begins. Traffic management plan in operation
  • September 2019 to December 2019 - Picton Street under construction
  • September 2019 to March 2020 - Wellington Street under construction
  • September 2019 to July 2020 - Hepburn Street under construction
  • December 2019 to September - 2020 Barrie Street under construction
  • March 2020 to June 2020 - Anglesea Street under construction
  • December 2020 - Construction complete

How construction will affect residents

Construction will affect:

  • Picton Street
  • Wellington Street
  • Hepburn Street
  • Barrie Street
  • Anglesea Street.

We will try to minimise any noise or traffic disruption.

A traffic management plan will be in place to make sure there is minimal disruption to residents. The Wellington Street motorway on-ramp will remain open.

On-street parking will be limited during the works due to requirements for maintaining traffic flows. For parking alternatives in your area, see the Freemans Bay parking permits zone on AT's website.

Working hours will be 7.30am-6pm Monday to Saturday.

We will give you advance notice if access to your property is affected or work outside working hours are needed.
