About wards

How wards are determined

Voters elect 20 ward councillors from 13 wards to the Governing Body of Auckland Council.

We conduct a review of ward boundaries and population every six years. This review may change the ward boundaries to reflect changes in population and achieve a fair ratio of elected members.

The wards are also determined by:

  • the sense of identity with, and belonging to, a community or communities
  • the geographical area of the services provided for a community.
