Trade business sites in Auckland discharge trade waste into the public wastewater system every day.
We make rules that ensure these discharges meet particular standards, in order to minimise the impact on the environment, public health and wastewater assets.
Under the Trade Waste Bylaw 2013, we require trade premises to hold agreements to discharge trade waste and set conditions based on risk.
Improving the Trade Waste Bylaw
We want to make the bylaw easier to understand.
This will include:
- clearer rules around which trade waste activities are low-risk, and which require a trade waste agreement
- introduction of the Trade Waste Control 2019 that will set out the existing limits to the characteristics and substances in trade waste discharges, as well as to flow rate and volume for low-risk discharges
- more information about the existing pre-treatment requirements for low-risk trade waste discharges
- information about what we look at when considering a trade waste agreement.
The proposed changes to the bylaw will not include a review of the fees and charges for trade waste discharges.
