The Aotea Great Barrier Shoreline Adaptation Plan (SAP) considers the future of council-owned land and assets across the region's coastal areas in response to the impacts of coastal processes, climate change, erosion and flooding.

About Aotea Great Barrier and Hauraki Gulf Islands SAP

The Aotea Great Barrier Local Board endorsed this SAP in July 2025. This SAP covers Aotea Great Barrier Island including:

  • Aotea Great Barrier Island
  • Te Hauturu-o-Toi Little Barrier Island
  • Pokohinu / Mokohīnau Islands
  • Broken Islands / Pig Islands
  • Rakitu / Arid Island.

Stages of Aotea Great Barrier SAP

  • August 2025 - plan sent to the Policy and Planning Committee for approval.
  • July 2025 - Aotea Great Barrier Local Board endorsed the plan.
  • October 2024 to July 2025 – feedback reviewed, final plan drafted and developed.
  • 7 August to 7 October 2024 - plan opened for public consultation (community feedback).
  • April 2024 ongoing - local iwi engagement.
