Youth voting programme for schools

This is a programme designed for students to learn about what Auckland Council does and experience what our local elections mean for the diverse communities of Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland.

About the Youth voting programme

The youth voting programme for schools gives young people aged 11 to 15 years old (school years 7 to 10) the opportunity to experience an election.

Students can learn about the Auckland Council local elections to understand and learn about important topics, such as:

  • how an election works and how it impacts our city
  • the difference between local and central government
  • historical and present-day examples of decisions affecting Māori
  • how voting works and why every vote matters
  • how Auckland Council works
  • the role of the mayor, the Governing Body and local boards.

At the end of the programme, students vote for real candidates on real issues. Then they can see how their results compare to the official election results.
