Community Flood Resilience

About our Community Flood Resilience initiative

One of the most effective ways to strengthen Auckland’s flood resilience is to work with our communities.

Our Community Flood Resilience initiative helps people prepare for flooding. It is a part of Making Space for Water and works with communities to:

  • understand flood risks
  • improve safety
  • reduce property damage.

We work with organisations and local groups with strong community connections.

Community Flood Resilience pilot programme

We ran a pilot programme to test and improve community-led ways to be flood resilient. The programme was from September 2023 to December 2024. During the programme we:

  • partnered with 11 organisations to boost community leadership
  • engaged with 1424 volunteers in resilience activities, such as clearing blocked streams
  • held 72 community events to raise flood awareness and improve stormwater management
  • planted 2512 native plants in key areas to absorb water and reduce erosion.

Our community partners

Our partners help communities become safer and more resilient by:

  • holding workshops to improve flood knowledge
  • spreading awareness on the importance of water catchment areas
  • expanding stream restoration efforts
  • supporting stormwater management
  • strengthening partnerships with mana whenua and local organisations.

Our mana whenua partner

Our mana whenua partner is Te Kawerau ā Maki, a west Auckland-based iwi.

Community partner locations
