Community Flood Resilience
About our Community Flood Resilience initiative
One of the most effective ways to strengthen Auckland’s flood resilience is to work with our communities.
Our Community Flood Resilience initiative is a part of the
Making Space for Water programme. It supports communities to:
- understand flood risks
- improve safety
- reduce property damage.
We work with organisations and local groups with strong community connections and local knowledge to strengthen long-term resilience against flooding.
Community Flood Resilience pilot programme
We ran a pilot programme to explore and improve community-led ways to be flood resilient. The programme was from September 2023 to December 2024. During the programme we:
- partnered with 11 organisations to boost community leadership
- engaged with 1424 volunteers in resilience activities, such as clearing blocked streams
- held 72 community events to raise flood awareness and improve stormwater management
- planted 2512 native plants in key areas to absorb water and reduce erosion.
