COVID-19 apply for a building consent information

We will continue to process building consent and code of compliance certificate applications digitally, as well as grant and issue them. No hard copy can be accepted at the moment.

You should know

The building consent office will be closed from 12pm(noon) on Tuesday 24 December 2019 to Sunday 5 January 2020. We will reopen on Monday 6 January 2020.
 
There is a statutory non-processing period from 20 December 2019 to 10 January 2020. These dates will not count toward the standard 20 working day processing time.
 
We will begin processing applications received during this time from 11 January 2020.
 
You will be able to book pre-application meetings from Monday 27 January 2020.

​How to apply for a building consent

Applying online will be faster and you will be able to track the processing of your consent online. You will also save money as you will not need to supply printed plans.

We can process your application faster if you submit a good quality application. Read how to prepare a quality building consent application.

Deposits must be paid at the time of application.

When applying online you will be directed to pay by credit card or direct credit.

Payments can also be made by cheque, cash or EFTPOS at any of our service centres. 

Our tip

For some common building projects we offer specific guidance and online application forms to make applying easier. Check building and renovation projects to see if your project is included.

Complete the relevant lodgement checklist and upload it with your application online. There is also a form to complete if you intend to provide producer statements during the construction phase of your project.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we are only accepting online applications. If you are unable to apply digitally, visit one of our service centres for assistance in making your online application.

What happens next

It can take us up to 20 working days to assess your building consent application.

Your allocated service manager will contact you if we need more information - see How we assess your building consent application

If you have lodged your consent online, you can access and track:

  • resource consents
  • building consents
  • required inspections
  • advice notes and conditions
  • code compliance certificate applications
  • licencing applications. 

We will also let you know the outcome of your application by email and post.

You need to pay all outstanding fees before we can issue your consent.
