Register your dog for the first time

Rēhitatia tō kurī mō te wā tuatahi

Follow this process to register a dog for the first time. ​

You should know

 The dog registration office will be closed from 21 December 2018 to 7 January 2019.
 
You can still submit your registrations at one of our animal shelters during this period (excluding Christmas Day).

​What you need to register your dog

  • A completed registration form.
  • A copy of the veterinary certificate if your dog has been de-sexed.
  • The micro-chip number if your dog has already been micro-chipped.
  • Whether your dog is a special category dog or working dog.
  • The breed of your dog.

You can pay by Visa, MasterCard or Account2Account (bank transfer). 

An online convenience fee of 1.75 per cent per transaction will apply if you pay by a credit card.

You will receive your registration disc or strap within 10 working days.

If you have not received your dog tag within this time, contact us

 By post

You can register three dogs per application form.

Post your completed form, documents and cheque payment to:

You can register three dogs per application form.

Submit your form and documents, and pay the registration fee at one of our service centres.

We will issue your registration disc or strap at the time of payment.

You should know

As a dog owner you should have your dog registered from the month that the dog turns three months old, or arrives in New Zealand.

There is a fine if you do not register your dog - see Schedule 1 of the Dog Control Act 1996.

Dog registration period

Registration period runs from 1 July to 30 June the following year.

What happens next

To make it easy for you to renew your dog's registration for the next registration period, we will send you a renewal notice and form in June to the address we have on record.

You will need to renew registration for your dog annually.
