Rīpoatahia inā raru te kounga o te wai

Pollution in waterways or drains

Phone 09 377 3107 to report water pollution or a water quality issue.

If the water is unsafe, we manage the risk by:

  • putting up signs that it is not safe to swim
  • warning the community
  • testing water quality
  • carrying out remedial work where needed.

Pollution in the sea

Phone the Harbourmaster Duty Officer on 09 362 0397 (extension 0) to report pollution in the sea.

This service number is available 24 hours a day.

Reporting sick or dead birds

Contact us to report a sick or dead bird around our waterways.

Do not give bread to ducks in the water as this can lead to avian botulism.

Pollution fines

Why we do this

We investigate reports of pollution, take steps to clean it up or undertake remedial works to preserve and restore our natural environment.

For incidents of significant pollution, we may send warning letters and abatement notices to the people causing the pollution.

We may fine businesses up to $1000.

We may also prosecute individuals. This may result in imprisonment for a maximum of two years or a fine of up to $300,000.

Companies may face fines up to $600,000.
