Food scraps collections are currently available only in urban Papakura and selected streets in Takapuna, Northcote and Milford.
Food scraps are collected weekly on your normal rubbish day using special trucks. You can put out your food scraps bin even if it is not full.
Rural properties in Papakura are not included in food scraps collections and these residences can use a wheelie bin or orange rubbish bags for disposal. You can also do home composting.
From early 2023 onwards, the food scraps collection service will be rolled out in stages across mainland urban Auckland.
For more information, see
Start dates for food scraps collection rollout.
Food scraps collection charges
You pay for the food scraps collection as part of your property rates.
Using a food scraps bin will save you money as you will not need to put out your rubbish bin every week.
For more information, see

Use of Papakura food scraps
The collected Papakura food scraps are turned into compost.
You can order and collect the compost free of charge if you live in south and east Auckland communities.
